Differences

One of the more challenging problems I deal with as a teacher, is catering to students of different skill levels. Some students know next to nothing about the subject matter, while others can do the usual assignments in their sleep. Sometimes it’s hard to keep both groups (and all the ones in between) interested.

Permutations

The first programming challenge I provided for my Java students who are ahead of the class went well. The students had to work a bit before coming up with the right solution, but they did find it. The second challenge is a bit harder: permutations. I hope it’s not too hard, though.

Writing about rewards

After reading a dreadful article on Gamasutra, I just had to write about risk and reward for my Casual Game Design blog. The Gamasutra article was so badly written that I had to read it a couple of times just to be able to say anything against it. I decided not to dispute the article point by point, but rather write an article of my own on the same topic. After a couple of attempts, I had a finished article that was only so-so.

The Alchemist’s Apprentice

When I saw a game titled The Alchemist’s Apprentice on Jay is Games, I thought: uh-oh. And yes, it’s a game about mixing ingredients and creating, well, stuff… strange stuff and no, it’s nothing like Jayden will be. The Alchemist’s Apprentice has some funny ingredients and recipes. It’s also very hard to turn the ingredients into the proper recipes. I did manage to create a codfish, but I forgot how.
